About Oklahoma

Oklahoma, Where the Wind Comes Sweeping 'cross the Lakes

Oklahoma is home to the largest number of lakes formed by dams in all of the United States.

In total, the state has nearly 56,000 miles of shoreline along its lakes and ponds, many of which are man-made.

Oklahoma's only natural lakes are its oxbow and playa lakes.

This state's man-made lakes alone total more than 200, the biggest being Lake Eufaula at 105,000 acres of surface area.

Additionally, Oklahoma is home to at least 62 oxbow lakes that cover 10 acres or more.

Majestic Mountains and Picturesque Waterfronts

There are four main mountain ranges in Oklahoma.

These include the Arbuckle Mountains, the Wichita Mountains, the Ozark Mountains, and the Ouachita Mountains.

Each offers its own natural beauty as a backdrop for your lake experience.

The majority of Oklahoma's lakes can be found in the northeastern corner of the state, near the Ozarks.

One such body of water is 29,460-acre Oologah Lake, located about 30 minutes from Tulsa.

Convenience is Key

Like Oologah Lake, most lakes in northeast Oklahoma are within easy driving distance of Tulsa.

Lake Texoma, which sits on the Oklahoma/Texas border, is less than 100 miles from Dallas, Texas.

Other lakes, like Birch Lake, are less than 150 miles outside Oklahoma City.

What's the Catch

Arbuckle Lake in south-central Oklahoma is said to be one of the best lakes for fishing in the state.

Anglers on Arbuckle Lake most frequently catch catfish, perch, crappie and bass.

Tenkiller Lake and Grand Lake are also popular fishing spots.

Back on land, outdoor adventurers can also visit one of Oklahoma's 35 state parks.
