About Oologah Lake

Convenient to Tulsa, Oklahoma City, and Wichita

Oologah Lake is located in northeastern Oklahoma in what was previously known as "Indian Territory." It covers 29,460 acres and has 290 miles of shoreline.

The lake is only 30 minutes from the Tulsa International Airport, Saint Francis Hospital, and the University of Tulsa.

Both Oklahoma City and Wichita, Kansas, are three hours away for those looking to take a day trip out of the area.

A Lake with History

In the mid-1800s, much of the area around the lake was owned by Cherokee, Chickasaw, Choctaw, Creek, and Seminoles, which were civilized people.

Oologah Lake (pronounced oo-la-gawh) gets its name from a Cherokee word that means “dark cloud” related to the fast-brewing storms in the area.

Will Rogers, a famous entertainer and commentator, was born in Oologah to part-Cherokee parents. His family’s ranch home, just off the lakeshore, is now a museum open to the public.

Sailing, Boating, Fishing, and More

Oologah Lake’s windy nature has made it a popular location for sailboating and windsurfing. Other activities include boating, water skiing, fishing, and swimming.

The lake is filled with a variety of largemouth bass, white crappie, white bass, channel catfish, flathead catfish, bluegill, sand bass, walleye, striped bass hybrids, and blue catfish.

There are several public recreation areas along with a wildlife preserve on the shores of the lake. Their trails are popular for horseback riding but just as useful for hiking or biking.

Ducks, geese, deer, foxes, raccoons, quail, doves, rabbits, and squirrels populate the area.

Explore Tulsa

Residents looking for activities off of the shore should take a trip to the city of Tulsa.

Here, residents can take a trip to the Philbrook Museum of Art for Italian and European-style pieces.

Residents can also visit the Tulsa Zoo to see many different species of wildlife and learn more about the nature around them.

Rich in History and Beauty

Oologah Lake is rich in both history and beauty, making it the perfect location for any kind of lake property.
