About Grand Rapids / Itasca County Area

Lake-Filled Region of North Central Minnesota

Minnesota’s Itasca County features over 450 lakes, some being known as the clearest in the state. In addition to the lakes, it is surrounded by multiple state forests.

Grand Rapids, the county’s largest city, is becoming the hub of North Central Minnesota. The town offers shopping, dining, and lodging establishments along with the Itasca County Airport and Grand Itasca Hospital.

A three-hour drive will bring you to Minneapolis or an hour will get you to Duluth or Bemidji.

Clear Waters and Picturesque Shores

Pokegama Lake is a recreational sensation located just outside the city of Grand Rapids. Summers at Pokegama are spent beaching, boating, water skiing, and fishing.

Sugar Lake, also known as Siseebakwet Lake, is one of the most beautiful lakes in the state. Its aqua blue waters and sandy shores mimic the scenery you would see in the Mediterranean. Surprisingly, much of the lakeshore is left undeveloped and it is never overcrowded.

Deer Lake is another turquoise body of water, home to some of the region’s most sought-after lake property.

The Grand Rapids Area houses some of the state’s most desired rental and residential property due to these stunning lakes and hundreds more.

Year-Round Destination

Itasca County is more than a summer retreat; when snow falls people flock to this region for endless winter activities.

Home to so many great fishing lakes, it is called an “Ice Fisherman’s Paradise.” Some use snowmobiles to travel the frozen lakes while others explore the county’s web of forested trails.

Fat-tire biking is a great way to explore Minnesota’s winter landscape. Over 100 miles of biking trails are located in the area but the Tioga Recreation Area, Chippewa National Forest Trails, or the Legion Trail are best for winter biking.

Head to Mount Itasca for downhill skiing, snowmobiling, snow tubing, and more.

A Cultural Scene

Judy Garland from Wizard of Oz was born in Grand Rapids, where her childhood home still stands today. It is also a museum, containing the largest amount of collectibles from the movie.

Other great stops are the Children’s Discovery Museum, Macrostie Art Center, or Historic Century School. For even more outdoor enjoyment, visit Scenic State Park or take the Edge of the Wilderness Scenic Byway.

Desirable Lake Property

Grand Rapids is arguably the best destination in Minnesota, featuring breathtaking landscapes, year-round recreation, and beautiful downtown.
