About Schoodic Lake

Located in Piscataquis County

The towns of Milo and Brownville are near Schoodic Lake, where one can find the necessities.

Dover-Foxcroft is just under 20 minutes away and offers restaurants, motels, and vacation cottages, along with hospitals and an airport.

Monson and Greenville are cities just an hour away from where there are more dining, shopping, and tourist attractions.

Large Lake with Private Atmosphere

Covering 7,021 acres it is one of the largest lakes in the Maine Highlands area. The waters of Schoodic Lake are exceptionally clear and reach depths of 188 feet.

Watercraft and Sports

Pontoons, rowboats, canoes, and small watercraft are most common on the lake but there is an occasional powerboat or other personal watercraft.

All watersports are allowed on the lake but the hardwood forests surrounding Lake Schoodic make it a great location for snowmobiling, snowshoeing mountain climbing, and biking.

The gravel roads that cut through the forest have become popular hiking routes for their scenic views of Mt Katahdin.

Summer and Winter Fishing Derbies along with Festivals

Schoodic Lake is designated as a cold water fishery but it still hosts a summer fishing derby where smallmouth bass is abundant. In February the lake hosts an ice fishing tournament that is timed with the free fishing weekend.

The Black Fly Festival takes place in June and has become a popular celebration despite its name.

Another event in June is the Best Whoopie Pie of the Year Contest where local bakers compete to make the Maine dessert delicacy of two cakes (chocolate, pumpkin, gingerbread, and more) with a sweet creamy filling.
