Lake Sundown

On the Edge of Tubaugh Wildlife Area

When living on Lake Sundown, you can enjoy 400 private acres of water with seven miles of mostly undeveloped shoreline. The land around Sundown Lake offers a diverse mixture of hardwoods and rolling meadows. The lake is located in Appanoose County, nearby Iowa’s largest lake, Rathbun Lake.

Boating and Fishing

Fishers of any level would have a hard time not hooking a prize on Lake Sundown. There is quite a variety of fishing here, from trophy fish to your next meal. Crappie, bluegill, and sunfish can be easily found around the lake at almost any time of day. A bigger prize is the bass and walleye that hide in the lake’s depths. For dinner, look out for channel catfish and bullheads.

Due to the lake’s larger size and depth, there are no boating restrictions for residents and guests. Of course, safety and state laws apply to ensure everyone has an enjoyable time on the water.

The Sundown Lake Recreation Area is a vast wooded landscape along the southern edge of Lake Sundown. It is an excellent spot for walking, picnicking, nature observing, and kayaking/canoeing.
