The Basics of Barefoot Skiing

As a lake homeowner, you’re probably familiar with water skiing. One of many “behind the boat” sports, it involves being towed behind a boat on a body of water, using a set of skis to propel forward. On any given day at the lake, especially July 4th, you’re bound to find water skiers everywhere enjoying the sun. But, while water skiing is undoubtedly an impressive sport, have you heard of barefoot skiing?

Instead of relying on skis, barefoot skiers use their feet to skim the water’s surface. To learn more about this unique sport, we spoke with Zenon Bilas, a barefoot water skiing champion and coach who trains new and experienced barefoot skiers across the globe. He discovered his passion for barefoot skiing after seeing it done in a 1977 ski show. The rest is history. Read on to learn more about this adventurous lake activity.

Barefoot Skiing Popularity

In the 1980s, barefoot skiing had its peak popularity. While it began as a fun acrobatic trick, the enthusiasm quickly caught on. “In the beginning, it was just an act in a ski show,” Zenon elaborates, “but Mike Seipel made it so that anybody could learn.” Throughout this decade, adventurous lake lovers sought coaching for this popular sport. But similar to skateboarding, its fame has ebbed and flowed with participation popularity through the years. In response, Zenon focuses on bringing this sport to a broader audience and emphasizes the joys and benefits of barefoot skiing.

What’s Great About Barefoot Skiing

The barefoot skiing professionals make it look easy. But in reality, it’s a very exact and technical sport, which requires a high level of focus. “It’s not a daredevil sport,” Zenon says. “I see it as a Bruce Lee type of mind/body sport. Once you master focus, discipline, teaching, and knowledge, then you can do whatever you want out there.” Because of this, one of the main benefits of barefoot skiing is the sense of focus that it provides you. “It’s the basis for how I am in my philosophy and my thinking,” Zenon says. Above and beyond the sport, the concentration that barefoot skiing requires can transfer to other areas of your life. Plus — it’s a great workout and an excellent way to spend time in the sun.

How Can I Learn?

In Zenon’s view, people should be utilizing their boats to their potential by doing sports! If you decide to give barefoot skiing a shot, it’s best to get a coach. “Trial and error is not a good way of learning,” he advises. “Being coached from the beginning is the best way to do it. Having a patient person next to you in the water can make the biggest difference in your skill development and confidence.” In fact, Zenon attributes his own development as a skier to his brother’s friend, who coached him through his first foray into barefoot skiing. The second part of the equation is driving. “The better the driver, the better the success will be for the person behind the boat,” he says. “It’s a collaboration.”

Possum Kingdom to Host Cliff Diving World Series

The tenth annual Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series is jumping off June 2 at Texas’ Possum Kingdom Lake.

The first of seven international stops on the World Series circuit, Possum Kingdom is a series Hall of Famer, making its fifth appearance in the competition since 2014.

Following only Azores, Portugal; Polignano a Mare, Italy; and La Rochelle, France, Possum Kingdom has hosted the fourth most Cliff Diving Series competitions in the event’s 31-location footprint.

The lake’s prominent rock formation, which features two cliffs that reach heights nearly three times that of Olympic diving platforms, “Hell’s Gate” made its first Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series appearance four years ago.

The Competitors

The World Series runs from June to September and features competitions across both men’s and women’s teams.

This year’s men’s diving team consists of 10 permanent athletes who represent six nationalities.

Per location, the competition will also see dives from up to four “wild card” divers from across the world.

These athletes have either not scored high enough in the previous competitions to become permanent team members or are new participants in the Series.

The women’s team represents four nationalities this year across six permanent members and two “wild card” divers.

The Possum Kingdom Series starter will bring the women full circle as Hell’s Gate saw the team’s inaugural dives in 2014.

Eleven judges rotate throughout the competition; five are selected for each location’s competition.

The 2018 panel includes six former Olympians and a former Olympic diving judge.

The Competition

This year, participants will compete in events in Spain, Portugal, Switzerland, Denmark, Bosnia and Herzegovina and Italy.

Each stop will consist of two days of dives, during which both teams will compete in four rounds of competition.

Athletes are required to make two dives of predetermined levels of difficulty, and one dive of their choosing; however, all maneuvers must be selected from five dive groups including inward, back, reverse, handstand and front take offs.

In a final round at each stop, the eight highest overall scoring members from each team will dive one last time to determine the location’s winner.

The competition will conclude in Polignano a Mare, Italy on September 23, where the 2018 Red Bull Cliff Diving World Series Champions will be crowned.

Champions will be named based on the highest cumulative scores after six competitions.

Boating License 101: Must-Know Boating Regulations

man, woman and child on boatHave you ever been in a boat with an operator that seemed a bit reckless and/or ignorant of seemingly obvious safety issues?

Has anyone ever admitted to you that they have a boating license but that their spouse, child or friend took the online test for them?

If so, you will be interested to know there are a variety of ways to educate yourself and others on common boat terminology, regulations and restrictions.

When it comes to water sports you can never be too careful so share your knowledge with anyone operating a boat.

State Boating License Requirements

Most states require boat operators to obtain a boating license prior to driving in the water.

Obtaining a state license requires you to pass a written or online test.

Although state regulations may differ slightly there are numerous requirements that are the same across the country from lakes to oceans and rivers.

There are only eight states that do not require a boating license in the United States. America’s Boating Course has the full list showing which states require and which do not require a boating license.

Vessel Versus Boats and Ships

Vessel is a catch all term for all types of floating devices designed to carry people or goods. Larger boats and ships are usually referred to as vessels more often than smaller boats.

Boats are small vessels propelled by oars, sails, or engines.

Ships are large vessels that usually carry boats as a safety measure.

What Boats Need Registered

Small non-powered boats such as canoes and kayaks do not require a boating license.

Sailboats, personal watercraft (PWC) and power boat regulations differ state to state depending on the engines horsepower and/or the size of the boat.

Basic Terminology

Make sure to know these common terms for boats prior to taking the drivers seat.small boat near dock with labeling letters around it

A. Bow – front of the boat

B. Stern – rear of the boat

C. Port – the left side of the boat when onboard and facing bow

D. Starboard – the right side of the boat when onboard and facing the bow

Hull – main body of the boat (i.e. bottom, sides and deck)

These terms are just the beginning of the detailed information on regulations you will need to know to pass your test.

Other important terms include certain lights and other items that help one to pinpoint the direction and location of your boat in the water.

Age Variations

Alabama requires that all operators 12 and over pass a boating license test unless they were born prior to April 28, 1954. Those born prior to this date need a vessels license but are exempt from taking the test.

Other states only require vessels license for those under the age of 16.

The minimum age that can obtain a license in a lot of states is 12 but others are 14.

The United States Coast Guard (USCG)  has a detailed listing of age restrictions, personal flotation device requirements, minimum passing scores and more useful information broken down by state.

Approved Online Test

The USCG link above provides information regarding which states allow and which do not allow online testing. All of the states reviewed for this article, Lake Homes Realty states, allow online testing.

This link also provides a lost of several boating courses and tests boat operators must take.

Cost of Courses and Tests

Most states require an online course be taken prior to taking the test. Boater-ed.com offers online courses with the final exam at the end.

Pricing for the course and test in Texas is $20 whereas pricing in most of the Southeastern states is $29.50.

Boater Exam also offers courses by state and the online test for around the same pricing.

Renewal Periods

The majority of states have no expiration date for boating license certificates.

Texas boating license are only valid for a year and Minnesota boating licenses expire at the age of 18 when the license is no longer required.

Boating License 101 Extra Prep

For the overachievers, Boater Exam has 134 videos on YouTube that detail all of the information you will need to take a boating license exam and be safe operating your boat or PWC.

Why Boating Regulations Matter

For your safety and the safety of those around you the knowledge of boating regulations, standards, requirements and terminology is priceless.

Knowing boating laws makes you all the wiser and more prepared for any adventure you may encounter even when your state does not require you to obtain a license.

Lake Home Parties – Tips for Creating an Unforgettable Experience

A fun lake home party is not stressful when you organize, plan and prepare properly. Parties at the lake can create unforgettable memories for family and friend when you plan appropriately.

Prior to Party Prep

Pick a party theme that correlates with the special occasion or time of year. Set a date and time for your guests.

To ensure optimal attendance send out a ‘Save the Date’ message via text, Facebook, and/or email as soon as the date is set.

If you are having a birthday party pick an age appropriate theme that the guests of honor chooses.

If you are having a party for another occasion, do your best to pick a fun, colorful theme that correlates well with the dreamy lifestyle of lake home living.

Lake Home Party

A great lake home party will allow guests to enjoy swimming, boating, skiing, floating, paddling, sunning and any other sports the hosts already own equipment for.

Decoration Preparation

At lake home parties the main goals are spending time together and making memories while soaking in the sun and enjoying aquatic sports.

Keep decorations simple ~ the lake is picturesque enough. Take advantage of the view and let your lake home create the dream party.

Allow the scenery to naturally relax your guests and promote lake life conversations on the wonders of the lake.

Food Preparation

Unless you plan to spend your time maintaining food and refreshment areas be sure to prepare foods that take little to no attention after preparation.

toddler drinking from a water bottle One easy idea is a crock pot full of hot dogs. Simply add water, heat the dogs then turn the slow cooker to the keep warm setting when they are hot. Keep a cooler nearby with condiments for the dogs.

Single serving bags of chips and other easy single serving snacks will not consume your time during the party.

Have a few coolers with a variety of can drinks and make sure there is plenty of bottled water.

Be sure to have paper plates, napkins, plastic utensils and trash cans in a few places to decrease clean up time later.

On the Eve of the Party

Make sure to have everything you need so that you can start preparing for your guest arrival. If you have decorations, start hanging them the night before.

If you are making specialty drinks or foods make them the night before the party so you do not feel rushed the day of.

Do everything you can the night before so that you can spend time being a host to your guests rather than their cook or waitress.

Lake Home Parties Safety

To be sure everyone stays safe while having fun always have enough life vest and other required safety equipment. Lake Homes Realty has numerous safety articles you can read for more information on keeping your guests safe.

And if there’s a chance the party might last through the night, check out our “Lake Home Guests – Invite the Family for Extended Stays and Be Prepared” story for more advice!

Relax, have fun and take a lot of pictures to remember your lake home party fun!

Recreational Boating – Tips for Buying a Used Boat

Recreational boating for family fun, fishing and relaxing is popular among lake home owners.

You can save money buying a boat if you consider a purchasing a previously owned one. In deciding which type of boat is best for your family there are a few things you should consider:

Decide What Type of Recreational Boating You Prefer

Will you stick to recreational boating at the lake or also on rivers and the ocean?

Will you be using your boat for hunting, fishing, skiing, cruising or racing?

The recreational activities you prefer should impact your decision on the type of boat you purchase.

Research your options prior to purchase and check out average prices of your preferred style.

Some other questions to ask yourself are:

  • Do you want a hardtop, canvas top or no top at all?
  • Do you want an inboard engine or an outboard one?
  • Would you like an aluminum hull or fiberglass hull?

Call About the Used Boat

Once you actually find the boat you are interested in and know reasonable prices, you should reach out to the seller or the dealer. Ask questions about the boats and show interest but do not admit you are ready to purchase a boat.

Make sure to write your questions down before calling them so you can write down each answer you receive.

Some things you will want to know are:

  • The year and the make of the engine and boat hull.
  • How many owners the boat has had.
  • If the boat has been in fresh or salt water, and the last time it was used.

If the person seems very persistent in selling the boat or in a hurry it is possible the boat may have some issues. Request an appointment to take a test drive prior to purchase.

Make an Appointment to Test Drive Boats

You will always want to see the boat and drive it prior to purchasing the boat. Most boat sellers will meet you at the water so you can take a test run.

If they do not have time for you or you do not feel comfortable buying the boat without a test run, walk away.

Inspect the Boat

When you test drive the boat make sure check that there are no cracks in the hull. Look for any parts that look new, as well as signs of neglect. Do not be afraid to ask questions about oddities you notice.

It is always better to get more detail and a full observation than to purchase a recreational boat that does not fit your needs or run properly.

Also be sure to brush up on your boating jargon before you buy too!

Business Ideas for Waterfront Home-Based Businesses

Person typing on keyboard looking for Business Ideas for Waterfront Home-Based Businesses

Launching a home-based business overlooking a waterfront location is an ambitious idea with many possibilities. Initially, you have to decide if your home will be open to the public, which raises many additional issues, or if it will be a private business simply run from the home.

If you choose the latter, the options are endless from office work like accounting, to creative endeavors such as art and photography.

Be sure to check with state and local government offices to comply with licensing, zoning and tax regulations regarding home-based businesses. The following ideas offer insight into both private and public waterfront businesses.

Seasonal Business Considerations

One of the first things you should consider is whether or not you want to run a seasonal or year-round business. If your waterfront property has sunshine most of the year, then it can be an ideal tourist location. But even if the property is in a location such as Lake Tahoe, where there is snowfall in the winter months, it can still be a year-round destination for travelers.

Ideas for a year-round business include converting the home to a bed and breakfast, a business center for travelers or a production studio. Ideas for a spring and summer business include becoming a water sports merchant or possibly even offering lifeguard training classes. A private home on the waterfront provides an excellent creative environment for writing, film making, painting and any kind of financial or technical work.

Lodging Facility

Converting your waterfront home into a bed and breakfast inn is one of the most popular home-based business ideas for waterfront properties. With many of the best waterfront locations, the location itself is a great marketing tool and can go a long way to help to gain initial interest in the property.

The term “bed and breakfast” also implies serving food, but if that’s something you do not want to take on, then you might consider calling the business something else, such as “guest lodging” or “lodging management.”

Business Center for Travelers

You can run a successful business for travelers if you provide all the essentials that might be found in a hotel business center minus the lodging, recreation, and food accommodations . The fact that your business has a waterfront view gives you the clear advantage of promoting it with attractive photography, which can be inspiring to travelers.

business center for travelers man using mac computer

You might consider promoting the new location with colorful brochures at nearby hotels and motels that do not provide business centers. Some of the equipment and services you might offer guests include computers, Internet access, color copy, fax, mailing, shipping and notary services.

Production Studio for Artists

A production studio in a waterfront home might be an idea to consider because artists love scenic environments. Many painters, recording artists, and photographers prefer using their own movable equipment so you wouldn’t actually have to provide the equipment.

woman painting in art production studio

If the studio is used for sound recording, then at a minimum, you’ll need to invest in soundproofing the walls or even building a dedicated room for vocalists. Otherwise, an empty room with artistic decor, electricity, and Internet access are the main selling points that you can promote in both travel guides as well as trade publications.

Water Sport Businesses

If your home is near a river or lake in which the local government promotes a variety of water sports, including fishing, boating, rafting, or swimming, then you have a great opportunity to attract spring and summer water sport tourists. All you really need to do is provide access to the water, but you can also resell or rent water sports gear as well for an even more successful business opportunity.

Lifeguard Training

Lifeguard training is another seasonal business opportunity to consider. In order to teach and conduct lifeguard training, you’ll need First Aid and CPR certification, which is taught by the American Red Cross, American Heart Association or community institutions.

You will need to gain certification for surveillance and rescue procedures in the event of emergencies. Anyone you hire as a lifeguard or water safety instructor will also need to be trained and properly certified. In order to run a successful lifeguard training business, you should get to know similar professionals in other cities if local competitors are not responsive to sharing business ideas.

Campground Facility

Turning your waterfront property into a campground for dwellers in tents and RVs is an effective way of profiting from your property during spring and summer.

It’s more complicated than running a lodge because you need to provide facilities for RV dumping in addition to electricity, outdoor lights, laundry, and Internet access. For the most part, guests will handle their own needs including food. You can market your campground to schools and other established organizations.

The number of ideas for waterfront home-based businesses is only limited by your own creativity and imagination. Above all, finding a business that fits with the locals and environment is necessary, but more importantly, don’t forget to consider your level of interest and passion for the business itself. Having an interest, love and a passion for the type of business that you’re entering might be the most important factor to consider of all!
