About Smith Mountain Lake

Second Largest Lake in Virginia

Smith Mountain Lake is Virginia's second largest freshwater lake with 500 miles of shore line. Created in 1963, the inflow source of this reservoir is the Roanoke River and is 55 feet deep.

Mainly in Franklin County

It is only 40 miles southeast of Roanoke and 40 miles Southwest of Lynchburg. While it borders both Bedford and Pittsylvania Counties, the majority of the lake borders Franklin County.

Boating, Fishing, and Parks

Smith Mountain Lake, or "SML" as the locals refer to it, is considered to be the "Jewel of the Blue Ridge Mountains", and with 32 square miles of lake, it is a great retreat for sailors and power boaters alike.

Anglers are also attracted to it because of the different varieties and abundance of bass and other freshwater fish.

Nearby, there is Smith Mountain Lake State Park, which covers 1,248 acres. You can choose from a list of activities to do such as hiking, primitive camping, boating, fishing and much more.

Beauty You Just Can't Escape

Because of this water body's natural beauty and convenient location, it's becoming more and more popular for residents and visitors alike.

Whether you want a small getaway or an everyday paradise, Smith Mountain Lake is the perfect retreat.
