About Lake Lookout

Lookout Lake, located 20 minutes east of Hickory between Lake Hickory and Lake Norman, is one of the area's oldest lakes. Also known as Lookout Shoals Lake, it was created in 1915 when construction of the Lookout Shoals Hydroelectric Station was completed. It covers approximately 1,305 acres and offers 37 miles of shoreline.

A More Secluded Experience

Although it is a bit smaller than other lakes in the area, Lookout Shoals Lake offers a more secluded boating and fishing experience. There are two boat launch sites available: Lookout Shoals Access Area located at the south end and Sharon Access Area at the end of Old Lion Road. Jet skis, water skiing, and tubing are allowed. However, boating traffic has been rated as low to moderate, so you can expect fewer crowds than larger lakes like Lake Hickory.

A Variety of Fish

Lookout Shoals Lake is known for its incredible water clarity and its wide variety of fish. Shore access can be limited in areas, but the boat launch sites make it convenient to cast rods from boats in the 30 foot deep waters and reel in largemouth bass, catfish, panfish, sunfish, crappie, and striped bass. The lake also hosts frequent fishing tournaments.

Beautiful Surroundings

Residents of the lake's shoreline community Riverwalk describe the natural beauty of lake as "breathtaking", and for good reason. Careful steps have been taken to keep the land around Lookout Lake in its pristine state. Although the shoreline is dotted with custom built homes, each one has been designed to ensure the quality of the natural environment for years to come.
