A Special Lake

At 288,880 acres, Upper Red Lake is 60% owned by the State of Minnesota, and the rest of Upper Red Lake and all of Lower Red Lake is owned by the Chippewa Native American Organization.

Only 48,000 acres are open to the public, allowing small numbers of fish to be collected from the lake; these numbers update yearly. There are Largemouth Bass and Walleyes.

It was originally used as a virtual walleye factory that was operable for 6 years before the Native American community and the Minnesota state government agreed to stop production.

Fishing is the large draw to this massive lake, but there are endless opportunities for watersports as well! Some of the activities enjoyed here are waterskiing, tubing, jet skiing, and wakeboarding.
