Lake of Alexandria

Lake Carlos is a premier lake location just five miles north of the Alexandria city center.

The city, renowned for its many clear, blue lakes, also offers an impressive list of restaurants, shops, and attractions. The Douglas County Hospital and Alexandria Aviation School are there as well.

Largest of Alexandria’s Chain of Lakes

Covering 2,520 acres, Lake Carlos is the largest of 11 lakes in the Alexandria Chain. It is also the deepest, with a maximum depth of 163 feet. Lake Carlos, Lake Homme Dieu, Lake Geneva, Lake Victoria, Lake Darling, and Lake Jessie are navigable by channels.

Powerboating, pontooning, sailing, water skiing, jet skiing, paddle boarding, and kayaking are just some of the activities happening at Lake Carlos. Largemouth bass and walleye dominate the fishing scene, but the deep lake also supports a coldwater cisco population.

Lake Carlos State Park

On the north end of the lake, Lake Carlos State Park offers an upper and lower campground, bathrooms, showers, picnic shelters, and the Ranger Service Station for firewood, ice, and permits. The park has fishing piers, a boat ramp, and a beach on the lake, so everyone has a way to enjoy the water.

During summer, the park trails are utilized for hiking, birdwatching, and spotting unique foliage. In the winter, they turn into trails for cross-country skiing, snowmobiling, and snowshoeing.

The lands are also used for hunting; the park will make designated areas throughout the season for hunters to use.

Winery and More

The nearby Carlos Creek Winery, one of the largest in the state, is an impressive establishment that produces fine wines. Visitors can tour the winery, join a tasting, or make a purchase.

For the 4th of July, many of Alexandria’s Lakes host boat parades and firework displays. The most famous is the Lake Darling Firework Show that happens every year.

Other events include New Years’ Eve bashes, the Alexandria Annual Fair, Ice and Lights, Christmas tree lighting, and more.
