St. George Lake is in Liberty, Maine, under 35 miles from Augusta and under 65 miles from Bangor.

The Augusta State Airport is under 35 miles, and the Bangor International Airport is under 60 miles. For medical care, the Waldo County General Hospital is under 30 miles away.

The Wild Grace Farm Store, a local grocer, is across the street from the lake on the north side. Tobey’s Grocery and Hannaford Supermarket are also within 20 minutes.

There are two highly rated restaurants close to the lake, Lori’s Cafe and 51 Main. Both are classic American eateries and serve lobster rolls.

On the Water Fun

St. George Lake spans 1,000 acres with a maximum depth of 65 feet. The lake is known for clear water and has plenty of room for recreation and relaxation.

Popular activities include boating, kayaking, canoeing, swimming, fishing, and relaxing on the shoreline. Access points are at a boat launch located off Route 3 or at a launch near Marshall Shore.

Anglers looking to toss out a line will find landlocked salmon, brook trout, rainbow smelt, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass, white perch, yellow perch, chain pickerel, golden shiner, white sucker, hornpout, banded killifish, pumpkinseed sunfish, and American eel.

There are many undeveloped islands scattered around the lake, which make for a unique fishing experience.

There is a two-month ice fishing season. However, anglers are limited to two lines so that salmon can develop.

Explore the Outdoors

St. George Lake Park is on the northwest side of the lake for on- and off-the-water adventures.

The park provides facilities for camping in the warm months and cold months, boat rentals, picnic tables, grills, volleyball courts, basketball courts, restrooms, a playground, a boat launch, fishing, ice fishing, a swimming area, seasonal lifeguards, cross-country skiing, hiking, and snowmobiling.

Visit Augusta

Fort Western is home to the country’s oldest wooden garrison building, which was built in 1754. Old Fort Western is a living history museum offering tours, hands-on activities, and unique interactive experiences involving the history of New England during the 17th, 18th, and 19th centuries.

For outdoor enthusiasts, visit Viles Arboretum, a park with six miles of trails, over 200 species of trees to observe, and wildlife all on this 224-acre garden.

Golf enthusiasts should check out Belgrade Lakes Golf Club, an 18 hole course considered one of the top courses in Maine and New England. It includes fabulous greens and fairways and beautiful scenes of nature.
