About Lakes and Mountains Region

Scenic Region of Western Maine

Escape to Maine’s Lake and Mountains Region for picturesque scenery and endless recreational opportunities. The region stretches north to south across western Maine.

The area is convenient to Portland, where there are shopping, dining, and lodging options along with the Portland International Jetport and Maine Medical Center.

Including the Appalachian Mountain Range

Maine’s Lake and Mountains Region is home to pristine lakes like Sebego, Flagstaff, and Rangeley, along with many more. The majority of these lakes are glacial, meaning they have clear waters, extreme depths, and sometimes rocky shores.

The famous Appalachian Mountain Range trails across Maine and ends at Mount Katahdin. Along the Appalachian Trail, you can explore 10 of the state’s highest mountain peaks. Old Spek, Baldpate, and the seven peaks of the Bigelow Range are included.

Or, you can make exploring more comfortable and take the High Peaks Scenic Byway, Grafton Notch Scenic Byway, or the Rangeley Lake National Scenic Byway. Along your drive, you can spot wildlife like moose, deer, or even a bear.

Favorable Destinations

The twin cities Lewiston and Auburn boast historic downtown areas that are a delight to explore. Separated by the Androscoggin River and “Great Falls,” both cities share water views. Great Falls Balloon Festival and Festival de Joie are significant events held here.

You can find some of the best skiing at Sunday River, Sugarloaf, and Shawnee Peak. Local clubs also maintain ATV and snowmobile trails throughout the state, so you are sure to have a place to rip through the woods.

For antique lovers, there is the Marden’s Surplus and Salvage in Lewiston, numerous antique shops in Bethel, and other great finds in the Androscoggin or Flagstaff area.
