Leech Lake Area / Walker, MN

About the Area

Area Diretory

Leech Lake is one of Minnesota's "grand" lakes. At 112,000 acres, it is the third largest in Minnesota that lies entirely within the state's borders. A day trip on Leech can turn into one that is a little bit longer...if you don't know your way around!

The lake has a rich and scenic up-north ambience and has become increasingly attractive to those a little more well-off, due to its size and relative calm in comparison to some of the more congested lake areas to the south. Incredible log structures dot its shoreline, especially in the area of Walker Bay to the west. The lake can handle any size boat, so cruising the vast waters is a popular pastime-and its heritage as a walleye fishery makes it one of the most desirable destinations for those in search of lunkers.

The lure of Walker's active downtown creates an atmosphere alive with tourists and summer residents who have money to spend. But Walker is well-rounded as a community for all seasons, not just for those to visit, but also for many who call this their home. As the county seat for Cass County, it maintains an in-town population of around 1,000 full time residents…with many more who live on the lakes just outside its boundaries. For those who do live it town the magnificence of the lake is always within view, just off the main drag.

If you like the lifestyle of Walker, but you think Leech Lake is a little too big for your real estate needs, Kabekona Lake is just a few miles to the west. At over 2,000 acres, your lake home or cabin can be isolated from the constant boat traffic of its granddaddy to the east, yet still be close enough to enjoy the many offerings the area has to give. And if you like big water but a more secluded atmosphere, the east end of the Lake toward Federal Dam is much less developed.
