With sparkling waters and stunning views, Carters Lake is located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of North Georgia. It covers about 3,200 acres, with 62 miles of often steep, undeveloped shoreline in Gilmer and Murray counties.

Carters Lake is about a two-hour drive from Atlanta, between the towns of Calhoun and Ellijay.

Carters Lake History

Created by Carters Dam, the tallest earthen dam east of the Mississippi, Carters Lake is the deepest of Georgia's reservoir lakes. The lake is more than 450 feet deep in many places.

Recreational Activities

Carters Lake is famous for camping, fishing, picnicking, boating, mountain biking, and hunting. The US Corps of Engineers operates four campgrounds, four boat ramps, a beach, several picnic areas, and playgrounds. All of these amenities are open to the public.

Carters Lake has a privately run marina offering boat docks, cabins rentals, and boat rentals.
