About Lake Mitchell

Right in the Center of Things

Lake Mitchell is near the center of the state of Alabama, just off Interstate 65 and ten miles due east of the city of Clanton, about halfway between Birmingham and Montgomery.

Lake Mitchell is the fifth reservoir in a chain of six on the Coosa River, beginning with Weiss Lake on the Georgia border and ending with Jordan Lake about 20 miles farther south.

Consistent Water Levels

Known for its consistent water levels, Lake Mitchell covers 5,850 acres with 147 miles of shoreline in Chilton and Coosa counties.

The average depth of the lake is 29 feet. Lake Mitchell is wider than its sister lake to the south, Jordan Lake.

Free tours of the lake are available at Mitchell Dam.

Gone Fishing

Extremely fertile, Lake Mitchell supports high densities of sport fish and forage species, including largemouth bass, spotted bass, bluegill and other sunfish, crappie, catfish, walleye, striped bass and white bass.

Lake Mitchell ranks as one of the top ten bass fishing reservoirs in Alabama. The first-ever Womens BASS championship was held on Lake Mitchell in 2007.

Boating, Waterskiing, and a Lot of Public Pride

For the benefit of every kind of water enthusiast, Lake Mitchell has an excellent collection of locally owned marinas, as well as two two public boat ramps.

The lakes Home Owners and Boat Owners Association monitors water quality, helped put a fire-and-rescue boat into service, and regularly performs a number of vital community projects.
