The lake sits within the 3,000-acre Stonecoal Reservoir Wildlife Management Area and offers boating, fishing, and hunting opportunities.

There are two concrete boat ramps located at both ends of the lake for easy access. Motorboats are restricted to 10 horsepower.

Anglers looking to toss out a line will find largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, channel catfish, crappie, bluegill, walleye, rainbow trout, golden rainbow trout, carp, and muskie.

Camping, swimming, and open fires are not allowed within the Wildlife Management Area, including Stonecoal Lake.

There are plenty of fun things to do in and around the Stonecoal Lake area!

First, check out Buckhannon River Walk Trail. This hiking area features beautiful scenery and wildlife observation opportunities. The trail is paved, pet-friendly, and good for biking.

Next, visit the nearby town of Elkins, featuring the West Virginia Railroad Museum and the Gov. H. Guy Kump House, providing the opportunity to explore West Virginia history!

Explore Clarksburg

Stonecoal Lake is also a short distance from the town of Clarksburg for amenities and attractions.

The Simpson Creek Covered Bridge is a historic covered bridge that makes a great spot for a picnic. It makes a great place for a photo opportunity and a West Virginia history experience!
