Cheat Lake is east of Morgantown, West Virginia, which is home to West Virginia University as well as many shops and restaurants.

It's close to the West Virginia-Pennsylvania border, making it easy to explore both states. For a big-city adventure, Pittsburgh is under 85 miles away.

The North Central West Virginia Airport is under 40 miles away, and the Pittsburgh International Airport is under 95 miles away. For medical care, the Mon Health Medical Center is around 10 miles away.

Residents can shop at Morgantown Mall, Morgantown Commons, or University Town Center or grab a bite to eat at Lake House Italian Restaurant or Blue Moose Cafe.

Cheat Lake has become host to some of the best fishing in West Virginia. It is home to over 46 species including largemouth bass, smallmouth bass, walleye, northern pike, yellow perch, sunfish, and channel catfish.

There are four boat launch sites along the shoreline at Sunset Beach & Marina, Cheat Lake Marina, Fishing Area & Kayak Launch, Cheat Lake Park.

Sunset Beach & Marina, Edgewater Marina, and Cheat Lake Marina service the area with supplies and rentals, and there are designated swimming spots at Cheat Lake Park, the backwaters, the beach area, and the headwaters.

Around the Area

For off-the-water fun, there are plenty of things to do in and around the lake area.

First, check out the West Virginia Botanic Garden, a lush site with numerous species of flowers and trees set in a former reservoir with a walking trail.

Next, visit Easton Roller Mill, a well-maintained old historic mill with knowledgeable tour guides.

Also in Morgantown is Monongalia Arts Center, a neoclassical arts and culture center offering classes, galleries, a theater, and a gift shop.

Explore Pittsburgh

There are many great attractions in Pittsburgh, making it a great day trip opportunity for lake residents.

First, check out Phipps Conservatory and Botanical Gardens, a green oasis with breathtaking seasonal flower shows and special exhibits.

Next, try the Carnegie Museum of Natural History, a great stop for the whole family to enjoy.

Lastly, visit Point State Park, which served as a key strategic spot during the French and Indian War. This National Historic Landmark and Park offer stunning views of the city and a variety of outdoor recreation.
