Ranked among Bassmasters best bass lakes, Smith Mountain Lake makes for superb fishing. It is stocked with striped bass, smallmouth bass, largemouth bass and is also home to crappie, catfish, and muskellunge.

Here, water activities are popular such as powerboating, canoeing, sailing, parasailing, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding, and jet skiing. There are seven free public boat launch sites located around the shoreline.

The lake is also home to the Smith Mountain Lake Beer & BBQ Festival in May and the Smith Mountain Lake Wine Festival in late September.
