Moss Lake was named in memory of Hubert M. Moss. Moss was a local superintendent and outdoorsman who lead the movement for a city lake. Before he was superintendent, he was a chemistry teacher at Gainesville High School and Junior College. Construction of the Fish Creek Dam completed Moss Lake in 1966.
Fishing and boating are among the most popular activities at Moss Lake. The lake covers 380 acres and contains a number of species of fish including: black bass, small-mouth bass, channel catfish, and red-ears. There are two boat ramps and a public use area that are run by the city of Gainesville.
