Scenic Douglas Lake is set against the backdrop of the Smoky Mountain foothills. This area is known for its abundant water activities, as well as picnicking, hiking, and camping. Birdwatchers can especially enjoy the fall migration of shore birds, wading birds, and other waterfowl that begin flocking to Douglas in the late summer.
Since its construction in 1943, Douglas dam remains an integral unit in overall water control and hydroelectric power generation through the region. Douglas Lake was created by damming the French Broad River, and collects water from a 4,541 square mile watershed.
The Lake is fed by both the French Broad River and Nolichucky River which originate in the tall mountains of North Carolina and Tennessee. The reservoir stretches over 550 miles of shoreline with a surface area greater than 30,000 acres. Douglas Reservoir reaches depths of 140 feet and is 43.1 miles long.
Douglas Lake is renowned for its Large Mouth Bass and Crappie fishing, however, the lake also boasts a host of other species of fish, including Sauger, Black Crappie, Channel Catfish, White Bass, Striped Bass, Walleye, Spotted Bass, Blue Cat, Flat Head Catfish, Red Breast Sunfish and Bluegill. Even with all these other species, Douglas Lake remains in the top five locations in the nation for Crappie, and top ten in the nation for Large Mouth Bass.
Douglas Lake is surrounded by four counties, Jefferson, Sevier, Hamblen and Cocke, and three major towns, Sevierville, Dandridge, and White Pine. Sevierville, Pigeon Forge, and Gatlinburg are all located within miles of the lake. In addition to the facilities provided by the Tennessee Valley Authority at Douglas Dam, you'll never run out of things to do in this area!
