Lake Cheohee is a reservoir in unincorporated Tamassee in Oconee County, South Carolina. This man-made lake has been called by several names (Cheohee Lake, Cheowhee Lake or Choehee Lake) over the years on US Forestry Service maps and place names on churches. However, according to the approved name on the United States Board of Geographic names the correct name is Lake Cheohee.
This is a very private and secluded lake with a number of coves. Access is via a paved road that connects to Lake Cherokee Road, over a mile away. Cantrell Creek and Knox Creek wind their way to the lake. Cantrell Creek especially is noted for the natural (not-stocked) trout. The majority of the vacant land directly surrounding the lake has been under the ownership of Lake Che-O-Hee, Inc. since the mid-1950s.
No gas motor boats are allowed on Lake Cheohee, so it maintains a peaceful atmosphere. Lake Cheohee is part of the Seneca Watershed and it is completely surrounded by the heavily wooded Sumter National Forest. The lake and forest area border that portion of the Blue Ridge Mountains called the Chattooga Escarpment.
