Located in Alexander Country in western North Carolina and named for the nearby city, Lake Hickory is a manmade wonder that offers 105 miles of weaving shoreline, amazing views, a bounty of wildlife, and numerous recreational activities. It was created in 1927 with the completion of the Oxford Dam and covers almost 4,223 acres with an overall length of 1,200 feet.
Lake Hickory boasts 5 public boat ramps, 2 fishing access areas, and 5 marinas - all convenient for casting your rod in the lake's seasonally warm waters. Fluctuating depths and water flows raise the maximum water depth to 100 feet and help support a healthy population of bass, crappie, catfish, and walleye.
Summertime is the best season to catch a variety of striped, spotted, white, largemouth, and smallmouth bass. Stake out a spot in one of the flowing creeks or inlets and you can also reel in some catfish.
The numerous boat ramps and marinas also mean that Lake Hickory is perfect for water recreational activities. Residents enjoy sailing, speed boating, water skiing, and tubing and can dock their boats and other watercraft at one of the numerous marinas when they are done. Although there are no designated public swimming areas, many lake properties offer private swimming access.
John Geitner Park on the southern shore offers a picnic area where you can also view the surrounding beauty of the shoreline's vegetation. Feed the many ducks and geese that populate the lake or look up to spot bald eagles soaring overhead.
