Lake Gaston, a 20,300 acre lake at the North Carolina and Virginia border, was originally built in 1963 for flood control and hydroelectric power. However, it serves wonderfully for recreational enjoyment such as fishing, boating, swimming, water skiing, wakeboarding and kayaking. Since 1970, this lake has been a popular retirement destination. With 350 miles of beautiful shoreline, it is easy to see why.
With the Research Triangle region of North Carolina nearby, Lake Gaston is frequented by patrons who describe the lake as one of their favorite vacation spots. Because the lake is close proximity to larger cities and near I85 and I95, it is easy to reach from anywhere.
Lake Gaston supplies water to Roanoke Rapids Lake, but is fed by Kerr Lake. The largemouth population is plenty, as well as striped bass. The striped bass population is supplied by the North Carolina Wildlife Resource Commission, so a decent number of catches are inevitable. Also, walleye are annually stocked by the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries. With other fish such as channel catfish, blue catfish, chain pickerel and bluegill, anglers have many reasons to return. There are plenty of tournaments to choose from as well.
With numerous marinas and public boat ramps, boaters will find that Gaston Lake is the best for fun on the water. At 34 miles long, the lake provides plenty of room to play. With average summer temperatures of 76.5 degrees, it is the perfect place to explore and swim. The water levels are regulated by Dominion Power, so the average depths of 40 feet and deepest points of 95 feet do not fluctuate. Lake islands such as Wobble Island and Goat Island provide much to explore.
Because Lake Gaston is surrounded by interesting towns such as Littleton and Roanoke Rapids, the local lifestyle has many personalities. After a busy day on the lake, you can dine at excellent local restaurants and unique, charming shops. Enjoy a performance at the Ridgeway Opry House, or choose from several golf courses in the area for a relaxing day on the greens. Whatever your interests, Lake Gaston has something for everyone year round.
