Apalachia Lake Real Estate
Apalachia Lake, North CarolinaApalachia Lake real estate is regarded as a beautiful, but lesser known, market in North Carolina for lake homes and lake lots. |
Apalachia Lake, a small, pristine lake located two hours from Atlanta, Chattanooga and Knoxville is a hidden treasure in the mountains of western North Carolina. Completed in 1943, Apalachia Dam formed the lake and was created to provide emergency power for aluminum production during World War II. Because an 8.3-mile underground conduit pulls the water needed for the powerhouse, the lake fluctuates as much as 8 feet daily. Otherwise, the average depths of 100 feet is well-maintained.
The 1,070 acre lake may be small, but the 31 miles of shoreline is not to be underestimated. Because the lake is so remote, anglers rarely use it. Fish such as smallmouth bass, spotted bass, largemouth bass, redbreast sunfish and white bass populate the clear, cool waters. There are no commercial recreational facilities, so the isolated natural beauty of this breathtaking lake is well-preserved. Waterfalls and cascades are well-worth the hike to discover. This 9.8-mile-long lake has been designated a Wilderness Waterway.
The calm waters of Apalachia Lake provide plenty of recreation such as swimming, boating, fishing, sightseeing, exploring, canoeing and kayaking. Local activities include horseback riding, golf, and camping. The vast majority of the surrounding property is the Nantahala National Forest. In nearby Murphy, there are plenty of local arts and crafts shops and delectable eateries.
Apalachia Lake is small in size, but large in breathtaking beauty.
