About Lake Como

Near the Finger Lakes

At an elevation of 1,309 feet, Lake Como is more than 200 feet higher than Lake Canadice, the Finger Lakes' highest. Lake Como is a small lake just south of lakes Owasco and Skaneateles. It only covers about 64 acres and is perfect for people searching for a quiet glacial lake on top of the mountains.

A Place For Relaxation

Due to its shallow waters and muddy sediment, Lake Como is not regularly used for swimming. Boating is allowed, but there are regulations to preserve the lake's peaceful environment for residents.

Lake Como is ideal for kayaking and canoeing. Traveling the lake at a slower pace allows you to enjoy the natural beauty and wildlife.

The lake attracts migrating waterfowl in the spring and fall, and the National Audubon Society has listed the entire Summer Hill region as an Important Bird Area. Lake Como and its wetlands are great places to watch for dragonflies and damselflies.

The Dorothy Mcilroy Bird Sanctuary is a mystical place that looks plucked out of a fiction novel. It is located on the southern tip of Lake Como along with the outlet.

The cold temperatures and northern plant species support breeding populations of Northern birds such as Dark-eyed Junco, Hermit Thrush, Winter Wren, Canada Warbler, and Mourning Warbler. This lake might be a bird-watchers dream!

Wine Country

A large tourism draw for the Finger Lakes region is its premier wineries. Named "the world's most beautiful wine region," readers of Budget Travel magazine, there are many outstanding, world-class Finger Lakes wineries located in the hills along Keuka Lake. Many different wine tours are offered throughout the area, and it is the perfect way to spend a warm summer afternoon.

Due to the high volume of tourism in this area garners, there is plenty of outdoor recreation, entertainment, events, wineries, restaurants, museums, and shopping for you to enjoy.

You can visit the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Site, enjoy the local events, see Hammondsport, or jump from lake to lake in the region. This community has plenty to do for everyone.
