Lake Moraine, located in Madison County, New York, is 251 acres in size and rests a few miles east of the famous Finger Lakes. The lake is also known as Madison Reservoir and sits at an elevation of 1,300 feet.
The Chenango Canal was opened in 1836 to connect the Erie Canal to the Susquehanna River, Utica to Binghamton. Madison Brook was dammed up to create Madison Reservoir as a water source for the new canal. Soon after becoming a popular recreational site, Madison Reservoir was renamed Lake Moraine in 1905, recognizing the glacial moraines on its shores.
The reservoir is well known for producing large chain pickerel, up to 24 inches. The largemouth bass is the main game fish, and fish in the 12 to 14-inch range are expected, with fish in the 20-inch range caught each year. Panfish, like yellow perch, are abundant but tend to be on the small side. Bullhead fishing can be excellent in early spring. Walleye are becoming more productive in the lake and should provide some good angling opportunities.
Lake Moraine is stocked annually with 780 tiger musky as well.
The Lake Moraine Association hosts fun community events and meetings throughout the year to help foster community engagement. Events like concerts, the 4th of July Boat Parade, Ladies of the Lake, and more.
The Ladies of the Lake are a popular group, and they host meetings so everyone in the area can come together and relish in old and new friendships. They will usually take part in activities such as knitting and storytelling.
A large tourism draw for the Finger Lakes region is its premier wineries. Named "the world's most beautiful wine region," readers of Budget Travel magazine, there are many outstanding, world-class Finger Lakes wineries located in the hills along Keuka Lake. Many different wine tours are offered throughout the area, and it is the perfect way to spend a warm summer afternoon.
Due to the high volume of tourism in this area garners, there is plenty of outdoor recreation, entertainment, events, wineries, restaurants, museums, and shopping for you to enjoy. You can visit the Sonnenberg Gardens & Mansion State Historic Site, enjoy the local events, see Hammondsport, or jump from lake to lake in the region. This community has plenty to do for everyone.
Whether you are looking to buy a family home, a full-time retirement residence, or find a vacation rental, Lake Moraine is an excellent choice.
