About Back Lake

Coös County, New Hampshire

Back Lake is in Pittsburg, New Hampshire, in the northern part of the state. It is close to the borders of Canada, Vermont, and Maine.

Pittsburg has local grocery stores, gas stations, and auto repair shops for the necessities. Burlington, Vermont is the closest large city, under 150 miles away.

The Northeast Kingdom International Airport is around 65 miles away, and the Upper Connecticut Valley Hospital is under 25 miles away.

Peaceful Lake Just North of Lake Francis

The tranquil waters of Back Lake encompass 348 acres of the Connecticut River Watershed. The lake has nearly four miles of shoreline, an average depth of seven feet, and a maximum depth of 15 feet.

The untouched north-woods of New Hampshire surround Back Lake, giving its residents a rural-feeling environment.

The water is considered a “cold water fishery” for brook trout, rainbow trout, brown trout, and brown bullhead. Fly fishing is a popular activity during the warm months; it is easy to cast from the shore and catch the trout cruising by.

When colder weather comes around, anglers troll around the lake and use sinking fly lines to continue reeling in the trout. Electric motorboats, small fishing boats, canoes, kayaks, and paddleboats are great for navigating.
