Willmar Area

West of Minneapolis

Wilmar is a hub city in western Minnesota, about 90 miles from Minneapolis. It is the meeting place of Highway 12 and 71, so it is easy to travel in and out of the city.

Its downtown area boasts a unique set of restaurants and brew houses. Wilmar also houses hotels, department stores, Rice Memorial Hospital, and Willmar Municipal Airport.

Alexandria, St Cloud, or Granite Falls are about an hour away if you wish to venture out for the day.

Lakes Around Willmar

Willmar Lake and Foot Lake have connected bodies of water in the center of the city. Robbins Island Park makes it easy for everyone to hang out by the water. It features a large sandy beach, lakeside trails, and a large playground.

Green Lake is the largest and most-desired lake in the region, covering over 5,500 acres. Its pristine, blue waters appear to have no end, given its round shape.

Eagle Lake, Long Lake, Nest Lake, Point Lake, and Lake Florida are other well-sized lakes. Norway Lake and Games Lake are on the edge of Sibley State Park. Monsoon State Park also includes the Sunburg Lakes.

An Anglers Dream

Anglers can expect to catch a variety of fish from the Willmar Lakes. Green Lake is known for its walleye as Florida, Games, and Norway Lake area for their northern pike and crappie.

When the lakes ice-over, ice fishing becomes a hit activity. Some set up with nothing but a lawn chair, and others enjoy the luxury of fish-houses. There are marinas in the area that can set you up with what you need.

Lake Shetek

Though Lake Shetek is in Southwest Minnesota, it is considered to be part of the Willmar Region. It is the largest lake in the area, with a surface area of 3,598 acres.

It is the go-to place for pontooning, speed boating, water skiing, swimming, or any other lake activity. “The Lakes” are an active social scene on the weekend.
