The Devil Track River pours out of the Superior Highlands way above Grand Marais. It meanders through spruce bogs, tumbles over ancient basalt, cascades through waterfalls and eventually finds its way to Lake Superior. Right at that locale, where the river mellows and greets Superior is a special cabin. It oversees this mixing of waters: the inland snow melts, rains and waters of the Devil Track Lake basin combining with the world’s largest body of fresh water: Gitche Gummee! The cabin was placed there back in the day, so it is right on the water: both the bank of the river and the beach of the Big Lake. The mouth of the river varies as there is a sweet push and pull: the lake banking up rock on big wind days and the river patiently cutting through, insistent on its gravitational right. Nor’easters here are a spectacle, best to behold in the dry comfort of this strategically placed cabin. When the storm subsides, beach comb for hours contemplating the ways of this northern landscape. Or head up the river angling for trout. Back at the cabin all is comfort and ease. A bank of windows provides terrific views. Tidy kitchen for cooking up the trout. Upstairs is open with another wall of windows overseeing the grandeur. Make it the bedroom or office or studio: it’s the place to be. Though, the deck that overlooks the river’s meeting with the lake is a pretty choice spot. There is a stalwart Red Pine there, its roots sipping from the crystal waters of Superior and the tannin waters of the river. That diet infuses all the flora around that place, creating a happy, subtle difference. In the winter, keep an eye out for wolves cruising the icy lake or do a hike up the frozen river. There typically is a well-trod snowshoe path all the way up to the big falls. A small homeowners association is in place: functional and friendly. A couple minutes to Grand Marais. Closer yet to the Superior Hiking Trail. Though, no reason to leave. Hole up and while away the hours and days: alone contemplating the big questions Superior so often provides insight to, or with loved ones and family finally getting that quality time together. This is an ideal, pleasant cabin on a rare section of real estate.
