Explore Lansing

Lansing, the birthplace of the Oldsmobile and Michigan's automotive center, offers plenty of history, culture, entertainment, and cuisine to explore.

The State Capitol Building opened in late 1878 to much acclaim and was restored to its original splendor in the early 1990s. The building, one of the premier examples of US decorative painting, is open to the public for free tours on weekdays.

The R. E. Olds Transportation Museum has a collection of cars and memorabilia as a tribute to the auto industry. The museum is courtesy of one of the city's most prominent citizens, Ransom Eli Olds. The very first Oldsmobile from 1897 is on display, along with other antique automobiles.

Michigan History Museum has three floors of state eras depicting scenes from the earliest peoples to the late 20th century. Visitors of all ages can enjoy learning about Michigan’s past, and Sunday trips are free.

Potter Park Zoo spans 20 acres and is one of the oldest continuously-operated zoos in the state. It is home to 500 animals and 180 species and sits adjacent to Potter Park, an 80-acre oak forest.

Visit Detroit

Detroit offers the perfect opportunity for an adventurous day trip. Nicknamed the “Motor City” due to its ties to the auto industry, Detroit is home to enriching museums and fun attractions.

Near Downtown, the neoclassical Detroit Institute of Arts features the Detroit Industry Murals painted by Diego Rivera. The Henry Ford Museum provides a unique opportunity to view exhibits and listen to stories about America’s tradition of ingenuity, resourcefulness, and innovation. Detroit is also home to the famous Rosa Parks Bus and JFK’s limo.
