About Lake Margrethe

The Gem of Ottawa County

Located just minutes outside of the historical city of Holland, Michigan, Lake Macatawa shares its shoreline with Holland State Park and Lake Michigan. Grand Rapids is under 40 miles away for residents looking to take a day trip.

The Gerald R. Ford International Airport is under 45 miles away, and the Holland Hospital is four miles away for easy travel and medical care.

From the Netherlands to the Midwest

Originally called Black Lake, Lake Macatawa was settled by Dutch immigrants in 1847. The 1,700-acre lake soon became a prosperous business and residential district thanks to the Chicago yachting crowd that sensed potential at the mouth of the channel.

President Gerald Ford used to spend his summers at the family property here growing up, and Frank Baum took advantage of the serenity of his family's cottage to write his famous novel The Wizard of Oz.

Fun in the Sun

It might be impossible to run out of things to do on Lake Macatawa. Not only does the lake share part of its shoreline with a state park, and is a stone's throw away from a museum. Hiking, camping, kayaking, and sailing are just a few activities lake-goers enjoy.

It's an easy sail away from Chicago, and the marinas provide fine dining to guests year-round. In the winter, there's ice fishing for those anglers willing to brave the Michigan cold.

Things to Do, Places to See

Lake Macatawa is full of activities and events year-round for everyone to enjoy!

Each spring, in keeping with the nearby city of Holland's tradition, tulips pop up in every hue lining the streets of downtown and the historical districts, just in time for the Tulip Time Festival in May. The festival is a celebration of Holland's rich Dutch culture.

The annual Tulipanes Latino Art & Film Festival and the LAUP Fiesta celebrate Latin American heritage and contributions to their community through art, music, and food.

A Ten Out of Ten

Lake Macatawa is fun-filled, community-oriented, and perfect for the entire family! With an endless list of activities to tend to and prime real estate to choose from, this lake just might be the place for you to call home.
