Alpena is also a great base for Walley, Brown Trout, and Lake Trout. Thunder Bay is the nations only fresh water underwater preserve with hundreds of shipwrecks dating back to the late 1800s. The cold water helps maintain these wrecks in outstanding condition. Two of these wrecks are less than 550 yards in front of the house. Many are in less than 20 feet of water and can be seen while snorkeling. Many of these have mooring buoys to make access easier. The glass bottom boat that operates all summer passes in front of this house to go to some near shipwrecks. Alpena also has several dark sky parks, unique natural areas, and even a bat sanctuary. This house is just a few blocks from the historic down town and is right in the middle of the historic waterfront.
