About Lake Erie

One of the Great Lakes

The fourth-largest of the five Great Lakes, Lake Erie’s surface area stretches almost 10,000 square miles with an average depth of 210 feet, creating the boundary between the states of Michigan, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and New York to Canada. Several large cities edge the lake such as Cleveland, Toledo, and Buffalo.

Depending on the area of the lake, hospitals are close to the lake and span the perimeter. Major hospitals are the Cleveland Clinic, UH Conneaut Medical Center, and Select Specialty Hospital.

Airports in the area include Erie International Airport, Cleveland Burke Lakefront Airport, and Erie-Ottawa International Airport.

An Anglers Dream

Lake Erie boasts over 20 different species of fish like yellow perch, Atlantic salmon, rainbow trout, carp, and catfish, all occupying the waters. An average of 1.5 million fish are caught by anglers each year. Whether you're fishing for sport or dinner or fishing from land or by boat, Lake Erie has something to offer for everyone.

Ice fishing is a common sport in the area from December through March. Walleye is the primary target during these months, but anglers report catching crappie as well. Guides in the area can provide any equipment you might need and navigate the ice.

Explore Lake Erie

There are nearly 90 marinas available to boaters all around the lake, making the area extremely boat-friendly for visitors and residents. Local areas of attraction like Put-in-Bay on South Bass Island and Kelleys Island hold activities for everyone. Catawba Island (Port Clinton) and Sandusky.

South Bass Island is very family-friendly with its food and entertainment options. Middle Bass Island is a popular area for cottages and condos, although the beaches, camping, and wildlife refuge are a perfect get-away for nature lovers. Kelleys Island is a great option for walking and exploring.

Shopping, food, and entertainment can be found in the downtown district as well as The Glacial Grooves — a National Natural Landmark. Catawba Island is unique in its wineries and orchards as well as its fishing and beaches. Sandusky is similar to South Bass in the entertainment factor, as its Cedar Point amusement park draws crowds year-round from both land and water via the marina across from the park.

A Nature Escape

Although there are several large cities in the vicinity, Lake Erie offers peace and quiet — a welcome escape from city life. It offers privacy without isolation. A perfect in-between for nature lovers who want to find a home.
