With 5,300 acres of bottomland hardwood forests, cypress swamps, and bald cypress trees, you have more than enough nature to enjoy right outside your back door.

Black Bayou Lake provides plenty of recreational opportunities, including fishing, canoeing, kayaking, and bird watching. Due to the variety of natural habitats, waterfowl, endangered wildlife, neotropical migrants, and resident wildlife can be observed here.

The refuge does have a Visitor Center and Conservation Learning Center if you want to learn facts about the area's history and nature conservation efforts.

What makes this lake unique are the wooden walking bridges that help create a mile-long nature trail. These bridges allow visitors to walk through the swampland comfortably.

Go to Shreveport, Louisiana

Once you are finished visiting the refuge, you can drive just over an hour south to Shreveport's city.

Visit the R.W. Norton Art Gallery houses over 400 paintings with collections spanning more than four millennia. You can also enjoy the attached botanical gardens, which cover 40 acres of landscaped grounds.

Next, you can tour the Shreveport Aquarium near the Texas Street Bridge. It has 3,000 animals within its beautifully built underwater habitats.
