About Lake George

Southern Tip of Lake Michigan

Lake George is a human-made lake with a size of 270 acres. Initially, Lake George was formed when George Earle constructed a dam on Deep River to power sawmills and grist mills. The lake is located in the city of Hobart, Indiana, and is named for George Earle's brother, Frederick Hobart Earle.

This lake is a popular stop because it is conveniently close to Interstate 64 and Lake Michigan's beautiful shores. To get to Lake Michigan, you only need to spend about 20 minutes on the road. The city of Chicago is only about an hour away, if you don't run into traffic.

Lake Recreation

Lake George is a popular site for recreation amongst residents and visitors. The lake is home to the Annual Clocktower Model Boat Race in September and Annual Lakefront Festival in August. Both events are popular local attractions.

Boating, swimming, canoeing, kayaking, and most other water sports are enjoyed on beautiful Lake George. You can often see people walking along the paved walkway that lines some of the shore in Lakefront Park. This park has excellent amenities, including a gazebo, paved walking trail, bridge, and benches for sunset viewing.

Lake George is a great place to test your fishing skills. Bluegill, largemouth bass, catfish, carp, and bream populate these waters and a host of other fish. There are a variety of water levels in the vicinity, allowing you to do some fly fishing and spinning and traditional baitcasting.

Local Attractions

Along with the annual events held on the lake, the city of Hobart has a lot of fun to offer. There is an excellent selection of local restaurants ranging from Italian food to Mexican food. Housed in an 1895 Victorian cottage, 54 Main Bistro is a farm-to-fork venue, offering the freshest ingredients and a new menu weekly.

Visit Southlake Mall and enjoy a variety of stores and additional food choices. Maybe you will have a whole new wardrobe after your visit.

The County Line Orchard is a popular stop for visitors and is a great place to pick local produce. You can choose your apples, enjoy getting lost in the corn maze, and feast on some of their famous donuts.
