    How the Lagoons Came About

Skokie Lagoons claims 894 acres of North Chicago, featuring seven pools of water that cover 242 acres combined.

Initially, valleys from a glacial drift were filled by the Chicago River to create a bay. When water levels receded, the area became a marsh, but by 1933 a 10-company crew dug out the marsh to create Skokie Lagoons.

Activity On and Off the Waters

The enchanting waters of Skokie Lagoons are just waiting to be explored. The boat launch on Tower Road makes it easy for you to set out in a kayak, canoe, sailboat, or small motorboat. About the waters, you may spot ducks, native birds, or deer along the shore.

Famous for its excellent catches of largemouth bass, walleye, and channel catfish, the lagoons also house northern pike and bluegill.

Erikson Woods, Mary Mix Mcdonald Woods, and Turnbull Woods are nearby areas featuring natural Illinois foliage for hiking and nature watching.

Reputable Golf Facilities like Skokie Country Club, Winnetka Golf Club, Glencoe Golf Club, or Lake Shore Country Club surround the lagoons.

Chicago Botanic Garden of 385 acres is just north of the lagoons, featuring millions of plants and flowers among many themed gardens and exhibits.

If you are an avid beachgoer, consider getting a membership at Glencoe Beach only two miles away.
