Kellart Lake

Kellart Lake is a quaint 65-acre lake surrounded by a private community in East Illinois near the Pigeon Grove Township. Champaign is under 50 miles away, and Bloomington is under 80 miles away.

The lake is half an hour from the Carle Hoopeston Regional Health Center and a little over an hour from the Central Illinois Regional Airport at Bloomington-Normal. Cissna Foods, a small local grocer, is five minutes away. There are also several public schools in Pigeon Grove.

Hungry Kellart Lake residents can stop by Garfield’s Bar and Grill, a local restaurant and bar with fine dining and spirits that locals love.

On, Off, and Outside the Lake

Lake activities include fishing and boating. The lake is populated with white and largemouth bass as well as catfish, bluegill, and brownfish. Motorboats up to 9.9 horsepower are allowed on the lake and there are no-wake zones around the lake for canoers and kayakers.

Off the lake, the natural countryside renders ample activities for wilderness lovers.

The 1,600-acre Middle Fork River Forest Preserve encompasses an abundance of woodland and pastures. Here, hikers will find a rich array of trails. The preserve is also the region’s foremost waterfowl management area and also offers campgrounds and fishing areas.

The Kankakee River State Park is 4,000 acres of wilderness surrounding the Kankakee River, which itself is good for fishing. Horse-lovers will find joy in the fact that the park incorporates equestrian trails and campgrounds. In the winter, the trails are used for snowmobiling and cross-country skiing.

At the Iroquois County State Wildlife Area, which is northeast of Kellart Lake, visitors can explore 2,480 acres of prairie marsh and dune flora. The park is well known for its excellent hiking and snowmobiling trails. Casual hunters love the park for its archery range, hand trap range, dog training areas, and opportunities to hunt deer and small game.
