About Lake Blackshear

A Few Minutes From Interstate 75

Lake Blackshear is a human-made lake on the Flint River in Georgia. A Warwick Dam created it in 1930, and currently has a surface area of 8,500 acres. The lake borders five counties in Georgia: Crisp County, Dooly County, Lee County, Sumter County, and Worth County.

This lake is conveniently located off I-75, making it easier for residents to take a weekend trip to Atlanta.

Fishing

What makes Lake Blackshear a unique spot for anglers are the old cypress stumps that were crudely left behind when the dam was constructed. It was thought that many of the trees would decay once the area was flooded, but many remain and can be an excellent place for fishers to toss a line. Boaters beware-- the stumps can be harmful to motors.

Largemouth bass, crappie, white bass, hybrid bass, striped bass, and catfish are the most common fish species caught here.

Other Recreation

Boating, swimming, and other water sports are all enjoyed on Lake Blackshear. The Georgia Veterans State Park operates two boat ramps and a marina with overnight facilities. There are also several other public boat ramps for easy water access.

The Georgia Veterans State Park also offers amenities including a scenic train experience, a military museum, campsites, sandy beaches, a lake resort, and an archery/air rifle range.
