The lake's superb largemouth bass fishing, as well as bluegill, catfish, crappie, sunfish, and sauger, draws anglers year-round. In fact, the lake once held the world record for blue catfish, weighing 111 pounds. Other outdoor recreational activities on the lake include swimming, boating, and skiing.

Northwest Alabama Regional Airport is 20 minutes from Wheeler Lake, offering regional flights. The nearest major airport is Huntsville International Airport, located about 30 minutes from the area.

To get between the major urban areas, residents can take US-72 on the northern side of the lake and AL-184 on the southern side. Additionally, Wheeler Dam Highway (officially AL-101) takes drivers across the lake at the midpoint.
