Located in northeast Alabama on the Alabama-Georgia border, Weiss Lake is 52 miles long and covers more than 30,000 acres, offering close to 450 miles of shoreline in Cherokee County, Alabama, and Floyd County, Georgia.
Formed from the waters of the Coosa, Chattooga, and Little Rivers, Weiss Lake was created in 1961 and named after F.C. Weiss, Alabama Power's chief engineer.
Weiss Lake has many unique features, including shallow flats, large coves, underwater drops and channels deeper than 60 feet.
Known as the "Crappie Capital of the World," Weiss Lake is particularly busy between February and May, the best time for crappie fishing. But Weiss is less known for its abundance of large-mouth and striped bass.
The Rome Sailing Club has used Weiss Lake since 1980.
Cherokee County also offers white-water rafting, great rock climbing at the famous Cherokee Rock Village, and sandstone cliffs, picnic areas, and an 11-mile drive through pristine Alabama forest at the nearby Little River Canyon National Preserve.
Within a short driving distance of both Gadsden, Alabama, and Rome, Georgia, Weiss Lake offers a great weekend getaway, a quiet vacation spot that maintains its rustic and natural feel.
