Whitewater Lake is an approximately 50 acre private lake in Salem, a small incorporated town in the northeast corner of Oconee County, South Carolina. In what is often referred to as "upstate" South Carolina, Whitewater Lake is located north of SC 11 which is also known as the Cherokee Foothills Scenic Highway. The lake is southwest of Lake Jocassee, and southeast of the Piedmont Forestry Center which borders the Sumter National Forest.
Whitewater Lake is actually a reservoir, a man-made lake. It is 1,007 feet (307 meters) above sea level. The lake is stocked and is known locally as a great place for fishing. Swimming and boating are allowed and a community dock and a boat ramp are available for lake residents. Whitewater Lake is part of the Seneca Watershed for Oconee County, one of two watersheds that cross the county.
The lake has also been referred to as "White Water Lake" on some County Highway maps produced by the State Department of Transportation. However, according to the US Board on Geographic Names, the correct name is "Whitewater Lake".
