Boone, whose family holds a significant place in the history of Holland. John's grandfather, P.F. Phanstiehl, was a close friend and associate of Reverend Dr. Albertus Van Raalte, the founder of Holland, Michigan, in 1846. In the early days, P.F. Phanstiehl played a crucial role in supporting the new colony, helping to finance it after a series of disasters affected the settlers. Upon Van Raalte's invitation, he settled in Holland and established its first tannery. In 1867, Phanstiehl opened the City Hotel beside his general store, which is now the site of Readers World Bookstore. He later expanded his investments to include a schooner, a dock, and a stagecoach line that transported mail between Grand Haven and Kalamazoo. Before the Great Fire of 1871, Phanstiehl was among Holland's most prominent merchants. Hermanus Boone, John H. Boone's father, married Helena Phanstiehl, the daughter of P.F. Phanstiehl, in a ceremony led by Van Raalte hims
