Crystal Lake is a beautiful body of water in Northern Connecticut situated between Ellington and Stafford. The two towns provide stores, restaurants, salons, and other typical establishments.

Crystal Lake History

Crystal Lake was first home to the Nipmuc Indians called the lake “Wabbaquesset” for the many grassy cocktails growing around the lake. The Square Lake and Ruby Lake before it was permanently named Crystal Lake in 1889.

By the 1890s, the lake was a flourishing recreational area with hotels, cabins, and cottages. The Sandy Beach Ballroom peaked in the 1930s when it hosted big names like Duke Ellington and Cab Calloway. The following years were filled with carnivals, sailboat races, dances, and more.

Crystal Lake is still a tremendous recreational location offering 200 acres of water for a variety of activities.

Kayak, canoe, or paddleboard around the waters for a relaxing endeavor. If you are into sailing, you can compete in one of the yearly competitions. Sandy Beach is an excellent stretch of sand for swimming, tanning, and other activities.

This lake is a hotspot for bass and trout, keeping fishers on the lake every day. The annual bass tournament is a fun fishing event that attracts participants from all over.

Stafford Motor Speedway has 10,000 seats that quickly sell-out for many exciting races held at the track. Sonny’s Place is a family-friendly amusement center with go-karts, mini-golf, a driving range, arcade, and a restaurant.
