About Douglas Lake

More Than 30,000 Acres of Water

In 1943, Douglas Lake was created by the damming of the French Broad River. It also collects intake from the Nolichucky River and a 4,541-mile watershed.

Douglas Lake is 43.1 miles long and covers a grand 30,400 acres. Its waters have a maximum depth of 140 feet and fluctuate 15-20 feet during the rainy season. It has 550 miles of shoreline, and less than 20% is developed.

Endless Outdoor Enjoyment

Douglas Lake is known for its abundant water activities, especially fishing. Named a BASSMASTER Top 100 Lake, it should be at the top of any angler’s list. It is in the nation’s top 10 largemouth bass lakes and the top five crappie lakes!

It is an exceptional location for boating and watersports. Its popular activities include pontooning, powerboating, water skiing, tubing, kayaking, and more.

The Douglas Headwater Public Swimming Beach features a roped-off swimming area, but there are many places you can dock around the shore.

In addition to the water activities, it offers picnicking, hiking, camping, and nature watching. Birdwatchers can especially enjoy the fall migration of shorebirds, wading birds, and other waterfowl that begin flocking to Douglas Lake in the late summer.

Important Amenities

On the east side of Douglas Lake is Newport Medical Center, and on the west side is LeConte Medical Center.

The McGhee Tyson Airport is under 50 miles away from the center of the lake, so it could be more or less depending on where you live.
