About Thurmond Lake

Location and Access

Thurmond Lake, or Clarks Hill Lake, straddles the Georgia and South Carolina border.

This beautiful 70,000-acre lake has over 1,000 miles of shoreline and offers a great variety of activities on and off the water.

More than 100 islands are located across the lake, which extends 40 miles up the Savannah River valley and 26 miles up the Little River valley.

On and Around the Lake

Due to the large acreage of Thurmond Lake, residents can enjoy excellent boating, water skiing, swimming, fishing, hiking, and picnicking opportunities.

Thurmond Lake is home to excellent fishing opportunities. The most popular fish species found here are redbreast sunfish, striped bass, channel catfish, largemouth bass, and bluegill.

The Dorn Boating and Sportfishing Facility, the largest boat launching and sportfishing facility in the Southeastern U.S., is among the lake's amenities.

There are many campgrounds for campers who want every available comfort or those who want to rough it.

The Bussey Point Wilderness recreation area, made up of 2,500 acres located on a peninsula of the lake, has a horseback riding trail, hiking trails, and mountain biking trails.

Hospital and Airport

Three major medical centers are around Thurmond Lake. The Self Regional Family Healthcare - Savannah Lakes, Wills Memorial Hospital, and the University Hospital of McDuffie are all under 30 miles away.

Two regional airports are located close to Thurmond Lake, Augusta Regional Airport and Aiken Regional Airport. The closest International Airport to the lake area is the Greenville-Spartanburg International Airport.

City of Augusta
