Large Lake Southeast of Ely

The beautiful waters of White Iron Lake cover 3,246 acres in the Superior National Forest. Its forested shores will give you a feeling of seclusion, but downtown Ely is less than 10 miles away.

You will have access to restaurants, shops, schools, Ely Municipal Airport, and the Ely Community Health Hospital in the city. The city of Virginia is approximately an hour away, where you will find attractions, entertainment venues, and more.

Recreation with a View

Featuring inlets and peninsulas and several small islands, White Iron Lake is best explored by kayak or canoe. Others speed the waters on pontoons, jet skis, motorboats, and more. Water skiing, wakeboarding, and tubing are popular as well. Walleye, perch, lake whitefish, cisco, northern pike, bluegill, crappie, and bass fill this northeastern lake.

Hiking, Skiing, and More

The Kiwishi Falls Hiking Trail is on the north side of Garden Lake. While hiking through the forest, you are likely to spot many plants and animals, but the trail’s large rocky waterfall is the main feature.

Go to Hidden Valley Chalet to ski, snowboard, or tube down snowy slopes. The trails are also used for biking in the warmer months.

Located in Ely, the Trezona Trail circles Miners Lake and features a lovely wooden pavilion where you can relax. The city also features the Ely Golf Course.

The Superior National Forest Lies east of the lake for even more hiking, biking, and cross-country skiing.
