Grave Lake is a forested body of water in Deer Lake, Minnesota, just north of the Suomi Hills hiking area. Located in Itasca County, it is among many other outdoor attractions.

Grand Rapids is only 25 miles south of the lake. The city provides many restaurants, shops, and hotels along with the Grand Itasca Hospital and Itasca County Regional Airport.

The Duluth International Airport is approximately two hours southeast of the lake.

Over 500 Acres of Water

Grave Lake features two large basins with a navigable passageway in between. The entire body of water encompasses 525 acres.

It has nearly eight miles of shoreline which are towered by pines and speckled with lake homes. The waters reach a maximum depth of 39 feet.

Lake Fun

Grave Lake is primarily a bluegill and walleye fishery, but it also holds a variety of bass. Anglers are successful in fishing by boat or from their docks.

Between the two basins of water, kayakers and canoers have lots to explore. Loons, eagles, deer, moose, and otters have been spotted in the area.

The Deer Lake Public Access Point is 15 miles from Grave Lake, featuring 4,097 acres of pristine spring waters. The natural blue hue makes it a sought-after destination in the area.

Visit Grand Rapids

If you’re interested in learning the history of logging in this part of the state, head down to the Forest History Center. You can see a recreation of a white pine logging camp from 1900, listen to stories from loggers and forest service patrolmen from different eras, or get a bird’s eye view from a 100-foot fire tower.

Follow the yellow brick road to the Judy Garland Museum, where you can get a glimpse at the world’s largest Judy Garland and Wizard of Oz collection, including the world-famous ruby-red slippers from the movie.
