Floyd Lake is in Detroit Township, Minnesota, which was settled in 1871. The name Detroit is derived from what a French missionary called the nearby namesake of Detroit Lakes.

He gave it this name because of the long sandbar in the middle of the lake that leaves a straight (détroit, in French) between its two parts.
