About Kentucky Lake

Spanning Two States

Kentucky Lake covers 160,309 acres, making it a massive lake with plenty of space and more choices for lake living. It was created in 1944 by the Tennessee Valley Authority's impounding of the Tennessee River by the Kentucky Dam and flows almost the entire height of Tennessee.

It is connected with Lake Barkley by a dam, which runs parallel for over 50 miles, separated by the Land Between the Lake National Recreation Area.

The Barkley Regional Airport is the closest in Kentucky, but the Nashville International Airport is also accessible. The Murray-Calloway County Hospital and the Marshall County Hospital are the closest for medical care in Kentucky.

There are several grocery stores in the area including Price Less IGA, Brewers Grocery, Kroger, and Food Giant.

Expansive Wonder

Kentucky Lake is the largest artificial lake by surface area in the United States east of the Mississippi River, with 2,064 miles of shoreline.

Given its massive size, there is an abundance of things to do on and off the water. Popular activities include boating, biking, hiking, fishing, horseback riding, wildlife viewing, water skiing, birding, golfing, camping, and visiting state parks and wildlife refuges.

Anglers will love fishing here, as there are so many fish species to find. These include largemouth bass, black bass, white bass, bluegill, sauger, carp, sunfish, catfish, crappie, perch, and yellow perch.

Land Between the Lakes

Land Between the Lakes is a 170,000-acre park between Lake Barkley and Kentucky Lake. Its wildlife, scenery, and activities attract over one million visitors a year.

The park features 500 miles of trails that can be explored on foot, bike, or on horseback. The Turkey Bay OHV Area is located within the park. It features 100 miles of off-roading trails for ATVs, side-by-side vehicles, and jeeps.

The Elk and Bison Prairie is a 700-acre enclosure where the mammals and their young freely roam. Tour the grasslands in the summer to see a variety of birds, butterflies, and wildflowers.
