Smith Lake (or Lewis Smith Lake), located within a short drive from either Birmingham or Huntsville, is one of the most unique bodies of water in all of Alabama. Situatednear the Bankhead National Forest, Smith Lake offers 500 miles of shoreline. Tucked away in the Alabama woods near the cities of Cullman and Jasper, Smith Lake has been a popular retreat for years.

This man-made lake sits at the Sipsey Fork of the Black Warrior River and covers a surface area of 21,000 acres within the counties of Cullman, Walker, and Winston. Finished in 1961, Smith Lake was named after Lewis Martin Smith, a former president of the Alabama Power Company. Known for the clarity and cleanliness of its waters, Smith Lake is ranked by many as one of the top three cleanest lakes in the United States. This particular body of water also presents some extremely deep areas as well, reaching over 200 feet in depth in some locations.

It holds the record for the largest spotted bass ever caught within Alabama.
